The Experience of Bibliotherapy for the Parents of Children with Intellectual Disabilities: A Phenomenological Study
Lee Yon-Sil

Kim Hyun-Joo
Abstract
This study explored the experience and meaning of bibliotherapy for parents of adolescent children with intellectual disabilities. In-depth interviews were conducted with five parents who participated in bibliotherapy for one to two years. The interviews were analyzed using van Manen¡¯s (1990) phenomenological methodology to deeply understand their experience and meaning of bibliotherapy in their vivid language. For the parents of adolescents with intellectual disabilities, the experience of bibliotherapy was revealed through: found my forgotten world from the book; share a load you can¡¯t put down; heart opened to others at last; self-healing activates itself when needed; and acceptance of a child¡¯s slow-growing adolescence. This study underscored the importance of practical interventions for supporting parents of adolescent children with intellectual disabilities.
